A slightly more active Sunday

Tyne River God

This morning’s weight was unchanged, which is an improvement on last Sunday, when it went up quite a bit[1]. As I was in town to photograph the remnants of Westgate House, I decided to have a bit of a wander in the general direction of the Haymarket, where I took some more pictures, including this one of the Tyne River God statue/fountain on the side of Newcastle Civic Centre. It wasn’t the longest of walks, but it was more than I’ve done on a Sunday for a while. I’ll have to do some more ofhtat kind of thing. I’ll be sorting out the rest of today’s pictures, and some from the last week or so as soon as I get a large enough tuit.

[1] Nothing at all to do with that bottle of wine last Saturday, I’m sure

Westgate House – It’s Gone!

Clearing up

Last night, Westgate Road was closed, and work began on the removal of the bottom section of Westgate House. I had hoped to see at least some of the destruction, but by the time I got there this afternoon, nothing was left standing, and the clean-up job was well under way.

I took a few pictures from various angles, which I’ll be putting on show later, but here’s one to be getting on with.

Take a close look…

Running the Numbers is some impressive work from Chris Jordan. If you’ve seen those posters or jigsaws where an image is made up of thousands of small photos, you’ll be familiar with the technique. But this is art with a serious purpose – attempting to get across the idea of large numbers in a visual way I’ve never seen before.

For instance, there’s a rendition of Seurat’s La Grande Jatte made up of 106,000 aluminium cans – the number consumed in the US every 30 seconds. You get to see the image and closer views showing how it was created. The full size version is 6 feet by 7 feet, and I’d love to see it.

And there’s more to see on the page – interesting stuff. And even more elsewhere on his site.
