The Moon and Venus

Venus and new Moon

Just got round to looking at some pictures I took when I got home on Tuesday night. Even though it was rather later than normal, I postponed my normal coffee in favour of setting up the tripod and trying to take some pictures of Venus and the New Moon. My own effort isn’t really much good, and doesn’t really capture just how beautiful they looked together. I was reminded to post this when I saw today’s Astronomy Picture of the Day, which shows the same view from Lisbon on the same evening. It’s a much better picture than mine, and I recommend that you have a look.

New Moon

I’m rather happier with this one of the moon on its own, though. More astronomy pictures on a “when I get round to it” basis.

Managed to walk a bit…

Hmm, Saturday’s weight is down a wee bit more – lowest it’s been for a few weeks, in fact.

Walked to Tesco’s and quite unusually walked back too. I rarely do that, but as this week’s shopping wasn’t too heavy, and the buses were taking a detour because of roadworks, I decided to make the effort. Just had a few twinges from my knee by the time I got home.

An improvement!

Now I’ve actually got round to uploading some pictures, I’ve actually found one of the enhancements in my upgraded Gallery2. This isn’t something visitors will notice, but it does make a routine task quicker and easier, which is definitely a Good Thing.

When you look in my gallery, you’ll see that each picture or album is represented by a square thumbnail image, which Gallery creates for me automagically. And a lot of the time, it makes a pretty good job of it. But for perhaps a quarter of my pictures, I need to change the crop used for the thumbnail to make it look better, or to avoid having a statue’s head cut off, for instance. Now up till now, the cropping tool has been a Java applet. This used to be slow to load, didn’t update the screen very quickly, and was generally icky. In the latest release, the Java thing has gone, and in its place is a far more responsive draggable frame. I haven’t looked into how it’s done, as I’ve been too busy appreciating the fact that it has been done. Nice.

March Photographs – Part 3

14 March 2007

Yes, I’m definitely using my tuits today! Here’s a small selection of pictures taken on March 14, this time with the Canon 17-85mm lens. In this little collection, you can see an art gallery and a night club.

March Photographs – Part 2

13 March 2007

Yes, I’ve finally got round to sorting out the pictures I took on March 13 using my Sigma 70-300mm zoom lens. In this selection, you can see some domes, a clock, some interesting reflections and a different angle on a familiar Newcastle landmark.

More to come. Soon. No, really.
