Life on Mars – First Impressions

I’ve just watched the last episode of Life on Mars. At this point, all I can manage to say is meep.

It was the televisual equivalent of a Pan-Galactic Gargleblaster, in that I feel like I’ve had my brain smashed out with a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick. And that was in the first 15 minutes. Things got a lot more strange, confusing and strangely wonderful after that.

I’ll refrain from saying anything specific until I’ve watched it again, and I’ll probably give it a few days to avoid spoiling it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

But I will say this:

Wow. Just Wow. Seriously Wow.

A more coherent and detailed report will follow later.

After the walk

Hmmmm. The after-effects of yesterday’s long walk were mixed. First the good news: my weight’s gone down. Now the bad news: oww!! oww!!!

Yes, my legs feel like they’ve almost completely seized up. Not my knees for once, though. This time it’s my hips, which is probably a sign that I really am getting old[1] :uhoh: :eek2:

It’s OK so long as I’m sitting down, but standing up and actually walking is a bit uncomfortable at present, so I ended up having another day in. This isn’t quite what I’d intended, but c’est la vie, and all that. I’ll try to make an effort to get out tomorrow. Probably. And I should have some pictures to put on show fairly soon, too. Probably.

You know it makes sense

Most of the time, CAPTCHAs, those irritating thingies that ask you to type in a word or code that’s displayed in some distorted form or other before you can sign up to a site, or post a comment, or whatever, are nothing more than an annoyance. Quite often, the distortion is bad enough for the letters to be ambiguous to a human, and there are automated systems that can decode the things. All of which makes them fail ever so slightly at their declared purpose of distinguishing between humans and nasty spambots. However, Defective Yeti’s Internet Access CAPTCHAs seem like a very good idea, and should be implemented immediately. Anyone failing the test obviously shouldn’t be allowed to comment anywhere.

Found at Look At This, which I really need to remember to visit more often. All the links you could wish for, and more besides. And some good photography, too!

The solution to piracy

It won’t have escaped many people’s notice that the music industry is very concerned about piracy. Here’s a solution that makes a lot of sense to me.

Thanks to Bob[1] for the link.
