Weight Report – 9 April 2008

Another small fall today, which is good news.

I walked to work again, had a short walk at lunchtime which involved a quite nasty hailstorm and walked home, which involved complaining knees.

I remembered to go to Holland and Barrett for some Glucosamine, and found that small packs were on one of their super discount deals, making them much better value than bigger packs. I got a couple of those to get me started, and might well get some more, as at the current price, it’ll be cheaper than stocking up with an online supplier. I also got some multivitamin thingies, which were also heavily reduced. Good timing, that.

Lunch was the nice cheese sarnie again, though I did add in some “hot chilli peanuts” which I got while I was in Holland and Barrett. Quite nice – roasted peanuts in starch shells rolled in a moderately spicy powdery stuff. More “pleasantly spicy” than “hot”, but I enjoyed them. And as the pack was labelled “Healthy Option”, I’m sure it was OK.

Maths lessons required at BBC News

Yes, it’s time for another dose of mockery. Regular readers may recall this, or this, or maybe this or even this – all examples of poor mathematical skills (or perhaps just a lack of proof-reading) on the BBC News website. Well, it’s been a while, and I’d almost forgotten about their problems with numbers, but today I was reminded that there really does seem to be a problem there.

Now if there’s one section where it’s important to have at least a basic grasp of numbers, it has to be the Business area. You get lots of numbers there, and getting them wrong, or making it obvious that you don’t understand what you’re talking about, makes you look very silly indeed. Take today’s quite serious report about the Pound being at an all-time low against the Euro. Amongst the speculation, explanation and commentary is this solid fact:

While the pound went as low as 1.2500 euros, conversely the European single currency touched as high as 80 pence.

Now the way that’s stated makes it sound like two completely separate events. One one scale, the poor old Pound is down to 1.25 Euros, and on the other, the Euro has battled its way to the heady heights of being worth 80p. Ummm. There. Is. One. Scale. There is no “conversely” about it. The statements are two ways of saying the same thing. It’s like saying “it rained, and conversely it was wet”.

If this was on any other news site, I’d ignore it, but I have this bizarre idea that the BBC should work to higher standards. Silly of me, I know…

How do they know?

Authentic

Only yesterday, I revealed the truth about the covert use of advanced, possibly even alien, technology in Newcastle. Whether it was some bizarre bio-technological genetic engineering or something beyond our current understanding of physics remains a mystery.

But there’s more. Obviously the door I discovered yesterday is just part of something much bigger. Today, I stumbled upon evidence that someone is dabbling with time travel. Now that can only lead to trouble. Before you know it, everyone will be their own grandparents, and history will become a bizarre tangled mess. Hmmm, maybe it’s already happened. Whoever is responsible for these dangerous experiments, and whatever they’re really up to, the most sinister aspect has to be this: they’re revealing themselves through toys. This label was spotted on the box of a small model dinosaur, on sale in a Newcastle shop, for all to see.

For anyone who can’t make out the details on the blurry picture, this is what it says:

Contents:
Tyranosaurus rex with

Real dinosaur sounds.
Light-up eyes.
Full articulation.
Requires 3 button batteries
(LR44/AR13/A76/G13) included.

Got that?
Real dinosaur sounds.   :uhoh:

Obviously, I didn’t want to alert them to my presence, so I had to make do with a covert photo taken with my camera phone. Would it be too risky to buy it, and hear for myself the recordings brought forward from the Cretaceous? Should I take that chance for the benefit of the throngs of Losing it[1] readers?
