Newcastle City Library Construction – 1

25 March 2008

Regular readers[1] may have been wondering what happened to my photographs of the Newcastle City Library project. I managed to document the demolition pretty much all the way to site clearance, but where, you may ask, are the pictures of the building of the shiny new library that’s rising in a not particularly phoenix-like manner from the metaphorical ashes of the old one? Well, I have been there a few times over recent months, and I have been taking pictures. But due to a lack of tuits, and a major case of playing with new computer syndrome, I haven’t got round to adding them to the gallery. I have put a few on Flickr, but that’s not quite the same, is it?

Well, that starts to change right now. I’ll be putting up more pictures from my various visits over the next, err, time period, quite possibly in reverse or even random chronological order. This set comes from March 25, and shows the framework looking quite complete. More to follow…

[1] Apparently I have some. Hi!

Weight Report – 23 April 2008

Oh well, I seem to be in maximum random oscillation mode again. Today’s weight is one pound less than yesterday’s, which is probably not significant in any way at all.

I lacked the motivation to walk to or from work today, shock horror, etc, and wasn’t quite as restrained as I might have been on the lunch front.

Did Gordon Upset George?

Java Embargo!

Is something going on that I should know about? Did Gordon Brown commit some hideous faux pas[1] during his recent visit to the US? Has the UK joined Iran, North Korea and, err, wherever else, on the list of countries forbidden to have access to superior US technology like the Java VM[2]? Or has somebody got a dodgy lookup table for the location of internet users?[3] Or are Sun’s servers having a bit of fun to relieve the boredom?

Oddly enough, while the automagic installer gave me the friendly message shown in the screenshot, I had no trouble downloading the normal installer. Of course, that will have been logged, and the office will probably be raided by security forces tomorrow…. :eek2: :uhoh:

[1] You know, that’s probably the first time I’ve used that expression
[2] For an arbitrarily “not” value of “superior”, of course.
[3] Google has decided that my office is in Germany once or twice
