Canon DSLR Remote Control for iPhone

OK, this is seriously cool stuff. If you have a Canon DSLR and an iPhone, you might well want to have a look at DSLR Remote from onOne Software. This is a tool to make work in your home studio a lot easier, and fun too!

First, you need to have a computer (Mac or Windows) connected to a network that your iPhone can connect to wirelessly. Then you have you run the free server component on that computer, and connect your DSLR to a USB port.

Now run the iPhone app. It will show you a list of available servers (if you happen to be running a few..). Tap on the right one, and you’ll have control over your camera, provided you get the more expensive Professional version ($19.99 or £11.99), which I thought was worth a shot. The cheaper Lite version lets you take pictures and review them, but not much more.

The Professional version lets you turn on Live View (provided your DLSR has that of course), change exposure settings and generally do most of the things you would do if you had your head behind the camera. This is great for setting up awkward shots of objects, as you can move them around and check on your iPhone to see if you’ve got the position and angle right. And of course, it gives you a wireless remote release – which, assuming you’ve already got the computer and the iPhone will save you some money.

I installed it and had a quick play this morning, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. I’ll have a proper play with it at the weekend, and I’ll post about the results.

While you’re waiting for that, there’s some more information and demo videos on the website.

Weight Report – 2 July 2009

Good, good. Back down again today.

And here’s a special announcement – I walked to and from work today! First time I’ve done that in a while.

It’s been another hot sticky day, which is not all that pleasant….
