Weight Report – 16 July 2009

No change today.

Did a good bit of walking around St Fagans today, so that covers the exercise requirement.

Weight reports may not resume until after the weekend.

St Teilo’s Church

St Teilo’s Church is one of the more recently completed buildings at St Fagans. It was built in stages between around 1100 to 1520, and originally stood in Pontarddulais before being taken down and painstakingly rebuilt. During restoration, traces of the original wall paintings were found, and it was decided to recreate the church as it would have been in the early 16th century, before all the decorations were removed or covered up during the Protestant Reformation. Here’s a sample of the interior:

If the picture looks a little less sharp than the average, that’s because it was taken indoors without flash. The image stabiliser in the lens enabled a moderately sharp exposure at 1/10th of a second, which is nice. And if you like technical details, it was taken at ISO 3200, which was automatically set by the camera.

Buzzing

I was recently challenged to get a picture of a bee. I didn’t get round to it at the time, but while I was at St Fagans, I gave it a try. And once I got this image loaded into Lightroom, I knew I’d managed a reasonable first attempt.

Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly

Now this is a prime example of why having a camera with a huuuuge sensor and more megapixels than you can shake a monopod at really comes in handy.

I was working with my 24-105mm lens rather than anything that would have let me get closer – even my 100mm macro lens would have been a better option for this shot, but I did what I could, and cropped it down to show off the colour and detail.

I’ll have to try more of this nature stuff…

Fancy Some Shopping?

Went to St Fagans: National History Museum today. It’s a quite seriously superb place – there’s a modern museum building at the main entrance[1] and a 16th century manor house with ornamental gardens. But the main reason for visiting is the collection of restored buildings taken from all over Wales, and covering a wide range of the country’s history. Some of the buildings have been provided with furnishings of the appropriate period. All of this is set in acres of woodland, and admission is free.

I’ve got a load of pictures to work through, but here’s a couple of samples. This is a row of shops that have been restored and fitted out to how they would have been in around 1920:

One of the shops is a photographer’s studio, which had this nice collection in the window:

More St Fagans pictures will follow.

[1] I can’t help thinking of it as “the new building”, but it seems it was opened in 1970…
