Tuesday 8 June 2010 21:10
Weight: 229.8 pounds (16 stone 5.8 pounds, 104.2 kg)

Ooopsie. Back up a bit today.

Today’s picture is from my visit to Berwick last year:

This one was originally processed at the time I took it, but I’ve now given it a bit of extra tweaking in Lightroom 3.

It’s that time again…

Time to try working with a different web browser, that is. As Apple have quite nicely provided me with a shiny new version of Safari, I thought I’d give it another try. I’ve imported all my bookmarks from Firefox, set Safari as my default browser, and giving it the traditional test of posting something on this site. So far, it’s doing better than Chrome was last time I tried it, as it’s managing to let me type all this text without pausing, hanging, or crashing.

I’ll see how it works over the next few days…

Lightroom 3 has arrived!

Tuesday 8 June 2010 7:29

And another thing seems to have happened while I was asleep: after a moderately long Beta period, Adobe have let Lightroom 3 out of the door.

I’ll be upgrading pretty much immediately, as the interaction between LR3 and Photoshop CS5 should make things work a lot better for me.

Fifteen minutes later….

Well, that was moderately painless. Adobe relieved me of £76.88[1], I downloaded LR3, ran the installer and entered my new serial number. As I already had LR2 installed, it picked up my original serial number and was ready to roll. It then asked if I wanted to update my catalog – a non-destructive operation, as it creates a new file.

And it’s up and ready to run. No time to play now, as I have to go to work, but I’ll be having some fun later.

In the meantime, find out more from:

One More (More) Thing

Tuesday 8 June 2010 7:20

At the risk of being called a fanboy[1], I’ll admit to watching some live coverage of Steve Jobs doing his keynote speech thingy at Apple’s WWDC yesterday. Rumours were, as always, rife. There was no surprise that the new model iPhone was announced. Some of the particulars were perhaps unexpected, but overall it looks like a nice progression with some major improvements over the [iphone-3gs-32gb-black current model], but as I’m in a two-year contract, I’ll more than likely be skipping this one and getting next year’s, which will no doubt be even fancier.

But there were more rumours. The expected new Mac Mini wasn’t announced, and it looks like the muttered about Magic Touch tablet control thingy may be mythical. But one thing that was more expected than most was a new version of Apple’s Safari web browser. But the Steve had nothing to say about it…

However, while I was asleep, Apple announced and released it. Quite apart from being allegedly faster and with more HTML5 goodness, the new version supports Firefox-like extensions, which might just be enough to make me give it another try…

[1] But not “fanboi”, please. Anyone who calls anyone that needs to be slapped with a very large wet fish. Possibly a large and hungry shark…

Lewis – Series One, Two and Three

Tuesday 8 June 2010 7:10

Can it really be four years since I first mentioned Lewis, the show I’ve come to think of as the continuation of Morse by other means? Well, it’s a bit more than that, actually. Following the pilot, three more episodes were made and since then we’ve been treated to four “two hour”[1] stories every year – the fourth series was on recently.

I’ve watched and enjoyed every twist and turn, and on a recent wander into HMV, I spotted this box set of the first three series for a quite reasonable £30 – that’s all twelve episodes, including the pilot. There’s a bonus disc attached to the first series with a short behind the scenes documentary, but other than that, this is a no-frills, extras-free set. But it’s good value, and watching all the episodes again was a pleasure. As of today, Amazon are offering the set for an even more reasonable price.

If you like a good detective story, with quite insane levels of brutal murder set in Oxford, you’ll love these!

[1] This being on ITV, two hours means more like 90 minutes, but we’ll let that pass
