Current reading is Pandora’s Star by Peter F Hamilton. I like Hamilton a lot, especially when he’s in BIG SPACE OPERA mode, which he is here.
This one (first in a series) is set in a future where wormhole technology allows instant travel between distant planets. So far, so normal. The fun bit is how this travel is accomplished. Not the usual gateways in space, oh no. In this set-up, the wormhole ends are actually set on the planetary surfaces. And how do people use them? Trains. Yup, actual, real, trains. Board the train one one planet, get off on another. I like that.
