Hopes, Fears, etc

And here it  a last. Hopes and Fears, the debut album from Keane. I’ve been looking forward to this for months…

The album opens with Somewhere Only We Know, which was a recent (and very successful) single. Sums up Keane’s vocal/piano/drum sound perfectly.

Next up is Bend and Break, more of the same:

If only I don’t bend and break
I’ll meet you on the other side
I’ll meet you in the light
If only I don’t suffocate
I’ll meet you in the morning when you wake

Which sounds quite wonderful when Tom Chaplin sings it.

Other highlights are Everybody’s Changing, which you should already know, and closing track Bedshaped.

Keane are often compared to Coldplay, but their songs are lyrically quite different. Having said that, Keane’s pianist (and principal songwriter) Tim Rice-Oxley very nearly joined Coldplay a few years back…
