50 Greatest Comedy Films

Yes, it’s yet another of Channel 4’s Arbitrary Number of the Greatest Something shows that seem to pop up on more Sunday nights than seems decent. It’s the usual formula: narration by somebody well-known (the ubiquitous Stephen Fry this time), loads of celebs doing the talking heads bit, and lots of clips.

Tonight’s selection of 50 Greatest Comedy Films is as good an example as any. It’s a pleasant enough way to pass the evening. And a chance to remember some of those classic movie lines[1]:

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here – this is the War Room!

Well, nobody’s perfect

These go up to eleven

I am serious…and don’t call me Shirley

The top comedy movie, as voted for by visitors to Channel 4’s website is Monty Python’s Life of Brian[2], and I really can’t argue with that. It’s my favourite of the Python movies, and contains more quality gags, brilliant lines and general outrageous silliness than even the best bits of the original TV series. Wonderful stuff like the “What have the Romans ever done for us” routine, and much, much more. Including perhaps my favourite line from any comedy movie:

He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy!

[1] All taken out of context, and the movies are deliberately left unidentified
[2] I cheated: the full list is on the website :cheesy:

Icicles

I decided to have a quick fiddle with the icicles picture I took a few days ago. All it needed was a quick application of the “Straighten” tool in Paint Shop Pro. Now those rooftops look a bit more level.

Icicles

I’m still impressed with the quality of some of the pictures I’m getting from the Nokia N70.
