This is the first new material from Snow Patrol since the massively successful Final Straw album. It’s not in the shops for another week, but it’s available for download from Napster and probably other services too. It’s been getting a lot of airplay, and like their earlier material, it’s been worming its way into my subconscious and generally making itself at home. The style is pretty much the same as before – lots of oooh oooh ooohs in the chorus, a vocal that builds and builds, and more of Gary Lightbody’s lyrics that are somehow simultaneously vulnerable and passionate.
It’s so clear now that you are all that I have
I have no fear because you are all that I have
There is a darkness deep in you,
A frightening magic I cling to
Give me a chance to hold on
Just give me something to hold on to
There’s something incredibly moving about the first two lines I’ve quoted – partly from the words themselves, which are as powerful a declaration of love as I’ve heard in a long time, and partly Gary’s delivery. Overall, it’s a thing of beauty, and I’m now really looking forward to the album, which is out in two weeks from now. A review of that will follow…
