Well, the final vote has been taken and a decision has been made. As I mentioned yesterday, contrary to the earlier suggestion that the definition of “planet” to be formalised in a way that would let Pluto keep its status, the IAU have decided to be a little more strict.
Pluto is therefore officially not an actual planet. It always was a bit of an oddity, given its eccentric orbit and small size, so this decision isn’t altogether surprising.
There’s sure to be some fuss, of course. A lot of people apparently got upset when the Hayden Planetarium in New York purposefully omitted Pluto from an exhibit on the planets. Now it’s official, I’m sure people will get even more agitated. What fun!
