The Shins – Wincing the Night Away

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while, but somehow didn’t get round to it. I don’t recall having heard of the Shins before I had one of those “what the hell’s that?” moments on hearing their recent single Phantom Limb on 6Music. That’s a good “what the hell’s that”, you understand.

Well, I eventually managed to catch the name of the band, and got the new album as soon as it was available on Napster. And I have to say I like it. I’m not really sure how to describe what they do – on one level it’s mostly simple, pleasantly melodic music, with ever-so-slightly obscure lyrics. The kind that don’t make much more sense even when you’ve read a transcript. For instance, I have no idea why their new single is called Australia. That doesn’t really matter, though. It’s catchier than a very catchy thing that should be in quarantine, and is currently working its way deep into my brain. Silly video, too:

And while we’re looking at videos, you might as well have the one for Phantom Limb too.
