The Return of ‘Allo ‘Allo

Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once…

As exclusively[1] revealed here in March, the BBC has produced a one-off special episode of the classic sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo.

It was nicely done – we caught up with cafe owner Rene some years after the end of the war, as he is writing his memoirs. He was joined by as many of the cast who are still with us and able to perform, with all the usual catchphrases making their expected appearances. This was intercut with lots of clips, interviews and background information. All great fun, and the studio audience, many of whom were in appropriate costumes, seemed to enjoy it.

One final touch was nice: like most David Croft/Jimmy Perry sitcoms, every episode used to end with an on-screen caption reading “You have been watching”, which was followed by shots of the performers showing the actors’ names. For this live show, the words were lowered onto the stage. Actual sold letters hanging in front of the cast.

[1] Exclusive for a Gateshead based Welsh forty-something computer geek with an odd habit of photographing demolition jobs.[2]
