Not that I really need it…

I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist it for long. My cable internet connection from Virgin Media has been gradually increasing in speed without me having to actually do anything since the time I upgraded from the original 512kb service to the super-fast 1Mb version some years back. The service has been gradually upgraded to the point where it’s now (nominally at least) 20Mb. Now that’s one of those “depends what’s happening” speeds, of course, and it depends what you’re trying to connect to, and if you’re in the habit of downloading gigabytes at a time on a regular basis, you’re likely to get your connection slowed down for varying periods. But for my purposes, it’s quite nifty, and my own experience has been of a reliable service. I know other people have had problems, though…

Anyway, they’ve introduced a higher level of service. Yup, depending on where you live, you might, like me, be able to get the Virgin Media 50Mb service. Now, I have to say that I don’t really need that much download speed, but it does have a major advantage over my present service: the upload speed is a quite tasty 1.5Mb, which is at least twice what I get now. Now that I can use. It’ll be quicker to upload pictures to my website or to Flickr, and my online backups can go a bit quicker, too.

So, yeah, I’ve ordered it. I’ll post an update when I’ve got my shiny new modem installed.
