Weight and Stuff Report – 26 January 2010

Good, good. Down a wee bit more today.

As I walked to work today, I noticed that even though it’s been a while since most of the snow disappeared, there are still a few odd lumps here and there. It seems that where people have cleared paths, and so piled up the snow, that some of those piles are very reluctant to melt. I suppose it has remained fairly cold[1], but I was pretty sure it was warm enough to melt ice.

Here’s one lump:

Gritty Snow

Gritty Snow

And here’s another:

It's still here!

It's still here!

You’d have thought that a lump of ice with that much grit in it would have its freezing point sufficiently suppressed[2] to have melted a week or so ago, but apparently not.

[1] I tend not to notice: Losing it[1] HQ is nicely heated, and when I go out, I wear a warm coat…
[2] Sorry, I don’t remember enough of my A-Level chemistry[3] to work out the numbers
[3] It was, oh buggrit, 29 years ago, you know
