Weight and Stuff Report – 16 July 2010

Hmmm, another drop today. Good stuff.

This being the last weekday before I go back to work on Monday after two weeks off :wah: , I decided to get out and about and do something. So, after doing tomorrow’s shopping this morning[1], I decided it was long past time for me to visit the Doctor Who exhibition at the Centre for Life. This had loads of props and costumes from the last few years, including some from the first half of this year’s series. All good fun. They also had the Face of Boe, though he wasn’t being very communicative. But the best bit was the Daleks! They have a room set up, where you walk into near darkness. You can see yourself on monitors, and once you’ve been detected, the Daleks that are arranged around the edge of the room activate and say nasty things to you, until Davros himself gets in on the act and laser beams fire[2]. You can then escape into the Tardis. Well, the Tardis entrance, which leads you out of the exhibition.

While I was there, I also saw some fun science demos and a planetarium show. You need to do that to justify the ever so slightly high cost of entry…

After that, I had a walk around town, where I saw that some people seem not to have noticed that Woolworth’s has been closed for a while:

Hope over experience?

I don’t think British Gas are going to get those bills paid any time soon.

Then I took a bus to the MetroCentre for a rare visit there. Then I came home.

[1] Allowing me to do something else tomorrow should the weather and my intertia allow…
[2] Actually exterminating visitors is apparently not allowed. Health and Safety, and all that kind of thing, probably

Some Improvements…

As I mentioned yesterday, the long-postponed demolition of the Gateshead Car Park is about to begin. But before that, there was a bit of unfinished business. Last orders have finally been called on the Trafalgar pub. I caught some of the closing stages of the action today on my way to Tesco’s. I got a few (poor) images with my phone, which seemed to struggle more than usual to get a sensible exposure. But here we go:

Last Orders

The Trafalgar meets its Waterloo. Or something.

I missed catching the Trafalgar name being torn down by a few seconds, mutter. But then it was all over apart from the clearing up.

And it's gone...

And it's gone...

And now we know what’s happening, the ubiquitous Thompsons have their banner in place:

A Promising Sign

Demolition starts on Monday 26 July

Apparently the work will be done using Nibbler:

But I may have misheard, and there may be some machines involved instead.[1]

[1] This is the point when anyone reading this who isn’t familiar with Futurama wonders if I’ve lost even more of the plot than usual…

Great Clouds!

While I was in Wales, the sky was generally on the grey side, with just the odd outbreak of blueness. Mutter, etc. It came as no surprise that when I got home yesterday, there was more blue than cloud. But what did come as a surprise was the quite lovely colours in the sky last night. I was so impressed, I took some pictures:
