BBC News reports that 30 bottles of champagne believed to date back to the 1780s have been found on the Baltic seabed.
I’m pleased to say that the divers did the sensible thing and opened one, which was apparently Good Stuff.
The rest will probably be auctioned, as crazy people are expected to pay up to £45,000 per bottle. Which is a lot to pay for a bottle of anything. Of course, the people who pay that kind of money for old wine don’t actually drink it, they just collect it and then sell it for even more money later.
Though maybe the local authorities will decide that the most appropriate thing to do with the remaining bottles would be to have a really good party. I’d vote for that.
