I mentioned recently that my plasma ball had ceased to function and that I really should get round to getting a new one, because everyone needs a plasma ball around the place, right?
Well, last night, I decided to do some research and see where I could get a reasonably sized one at a moderate price. Amazon looked like a good bet (as is often the case), but then my search turned up a special offer from Maplin. They had one of a suitable size (8 inches, or 200mm diameter or thereabouts) at a reduced price – down from £19.99 to £9.99, which was a definite bargain. And according to the website, they had them in stock in the Newcastle branch.
So, I popped over there this morning and bought one. Once I got it home, I plugged it in, turned it on, and was pleased with what I saw:
The ball is of glass, as is normal for these things, and the plastic base has a three position switch – off, on and “audio”. The last one puts it into a mode where it reacts to sound (or more precisely to vibrations hitting it). You’d probably need to have it quite near the speakers to get a good effect from that, though. It also has a black plastic cover which you can position behind the ball, which makes the streams of glowing gas much easier to see in even quite bright light.
But to get the best view, you need a bit of darkness. Here are a couple of pictures taken hand-held with the 5D. I’ll do some tripod work another time, but these should do for now:
I think at this point it’s appropriate to say
Bwahahahahahah!!! The fools!!! They said I was mad!!!!!!!!!!
Oh. Ah. Yes, I suppose they might have a point there…
