Doctor Who – Closing Time

Another nicely twisted episode this week, with multiple levels…

When the Doctor, having been travelling for quite some time since leaving Amy and Rory[1], decides to pay a last visit to his friend Craig, who we met in The Lodger. And he soon realises that something very odd is going on, and despite feeling his age, and apparently being resigned to his impending fate, he can’t resist getting involved.

And so, we have some fun and games in a department store[2], with a Cybermat, some Cybermen, the Doctor and Craig being mistaken for a gay couple, and the Doctor proving that he can indeed speak Baby. All nicely silly, and could have made a simple stand-alone episode, but the Doctor’s mood, and his sense of impending doom, tied it neatly into the overall plan of this year’s series.

Then of course, there was the unexpected epilogue, where River Song, having just gained her doctorate, has her researches interrupted by Madame Kovarian, the delightful “eye-patch lady” and her Silent friends. And they’ve brought a nice outfit for River to wear, which we’ve all seen before…

So, next week, we come full circle, and the Doctor will go to America and meet that Impossible Astronaut. But if the trailer’s anything to go on, he’s going to see some other things first…

[1] It’s not made explicit, but if you recall, we met a Doctor who was 200 years older in The Impossible Astronaut, so unless he gets up to quite a lot in the early part of the next episode, he’s probably spent most of that time…
[2] Recognisably Howell’s of House of Fraser in Cardiff, which has previously pretended to be in London, but this time is pretending to be in Colchester
