Weight and Stuff Report – 4 April 2012

In a surprise development, I’m down again today. Can this go on?

After the rain, snow, wind, falls of frogs[1] and the like yesterday, today was something of an improvement. Still nowhere near as warm as last week, and with a quite nasty lazy wind blowing, but with a general absence of rain and snow[2]. I started the day with a walk to Tesco for some supplies[3], then had a return trip on the bus to pour the contents of my penny jar[4] into the magic coin counting machine, which eventually spat out a voucher for slightly more money than my rough guess had led me to expect.

For the afternoon, I went into Newcastle for a visit to the Discovery Museum, where I was reminded why I usually visit such places when the schools aren’t on holiday as well. I then had a bit of a wander round town, dropped off some Easter goodies in the office because I’m nice to my staff and had a very late lunch at Caffè Nero[5]. I did a bit more looking around, didn’t buy anything, and came home.

Today’s picture is another Saltwell Park swan image from Sunday

Reflected Swan

Reflected Swan

Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Aperture: ƒ/6.3
Shutter speed: 1/800s
Focal length: 92mm
ISO: 100

The exposure worked well here – the swan is bright white, but with plenty of detail in the feathers. It’s so easy to either under- or over-expose swans, but this one’s come out nicely. Here’s a closer crop of the same image, which shows some of that detail

The short exposure[6] has frozen the dripping water.

[1] Note: possible use of exaggeration for allegedly humorous effect
[2] Not to mention frogs
[3] Croissants
[4] Note: may contain other denominations
[5] The usual double espresso and a delicious brie, bacon and caramelised onion panini
[6] 1/800 sec at f/6.3, ISO 100 with the 24-105mm lens at 92mm for those interested in such details

Dropbox gets even nicer…

I’ve mentioned Dropbox before, and since then I’ve continued to find it extremely useful. Being able to synchronise files between multiple computers, easily transfer documents between home and work, drop things where my iPad or iPhone can easily find them and indeed having a useful bit of free could storage all add up to a very Good Thing indeed.

One of the nice things is the referral bonus. If someone signs up to Dropbox via your referral link, they give you an extra  250MB of space. Well, they did. But now they’ve doubled that to 500MB, and you can refer up to 32 people for an extra 16GB of free space. That’s on the free account, like mine. If you need more space and you’re paying for the service, you’ll get a quite large 1GB per referral.

Now that would be very nice as it stands. All your future referrals would be getting you more free space. But they’ve gone one better than that – they’ve actually backdated the bonus, so if you’ve already had a bunch of referrals, you’ll get the extra storage added for all of them. Now that is very nice indeed.

Sign up for Dropbox – it’s free (disclaimer: that’s my referral link)
