This crest can be seen on the old South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade building, which is at the shore end of the south pier. I include this cropped-down image here because the lion has such a peculiar face.
It’s almost like a death’s head thingy. Or maybe it was restored by the same lady who did that interesting job on a Spanish fresco?
