Sticks and Stones and Stuff

Today’s xkcd is a bit of a serious one. Click the picture to see the whole thing, and remember to hover your mouse[1] over it to see the tooltip message.

Sticks and Stones

Sticks and Stones

OK, done that? Now I’ll mumble about it. The old “sticks and stones” thing always struck me as being a bit on the dodgy side. Even when I was a very young Les[2] I was aware that words could most definitely hurt. Most of us have been hurt by something somebody said at some point in our lives, and most of us have, whether intending to or not, hurt someone else with something we’ve said.

Which is why I’m going to come over all philosophical[3] and draw extra attention to that tooltip:

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can make me think I deserved it.

Worth remembering…

[2] Yes, I was! I think it was on a Tuesday.
[3] Or something like that

Hey, your page has a new look! I hope you’re keeping track of the iterations. Let me know when you’ve hit 100 – should be any day now.

As for the topic, yes we should all treat each other the way we’d like to be treated – there’s a dire shortage of thoughtful, kind, loving, sweet people in the world. That being said, there are a lot of asshats in the world, too…learning how to gird one’s emotional loins is a valuable self-defense mechanism. Delicate balance – to be a kind and loving person, yet still be able to stand tough and strong when the winds of ugliness blow.
