David Wingrove – The Art of War (Chung Kuo 5)

Having spent much of the last six months on my Great Terry Pratchett Re-read-athon, I’m a bit behind with some other books. While I’ve been busy, two more volumes in David Wingrove’s revised and expanded Chung Kuo series have appeared, with another due soon.

In this volume, the war that began in the previous one has come to an end, or so it seems. The Seven (the rulers of the world city Chung Kuo) are victorious and the Dispersionists have been roundly defeated. It should be a time for peace, but there’s more going on.

The increasingly sinister DeVore has allied himself with what amounts to a terrorist faction determined to destroy the current social order. There’s trouble within the Seven, as a young man with his own agenda comes to power. And there’s growing danger from within the city as a young officer with extreme ambitions rises through the ranks.

And that’s just the first half of the book. In the second, there’s more development of another strand of the huge story, as things change for Ben Shepard and his family…

While there aren’t all that many major events as such in this book, it still kept my attention and kept me reading. More soon…
