This looks like good news – the Heritage Lottery Fund is providing funds to restore Dunston Staithes. There’s not a lot of detail in the BBC report, but I’m hoping this means that the section destroyed by fire will be rebuilt.
I’d been looking at these things for a while, but was put off by the price of the moderately sized ones. But the price has recently come down to a more reasonable level, and that was enough to persuade me to buy one.
There’s a range of different sizes, but apart from having more or less LEDs, and therefore more or less brightness, they’re essentially identical, so take this a a general comment on the whole range.
The light consists of a bank of white LEDs with a rotary dimmer switch to control the light level from off through very dim to AAAARGH MY EYES bright. At the foot is a mount that will fit into a camera hot shoe, where it’s secured by tightening a wheel. The foot also has a threaded hole for attachment to a tripod or stand. Not only that, but the foot can be removed and reattached on one of the shorter ends, allowing the light to be mounted vertically. And if you really want to be dazzled, you can connect two or more lights together.
This model runs from four AAA batteries, with a claimed running time of one hour.
It’s a convenient way of adding more light to whatever you’re trying to photograph or video. It’s smaller, lighter and cheaper than most fixed lights that I’ve seen, and has some advantages over using a camera’s internal flash, or an external flash unit. Because it’s a continuous light, you can set up your shot and get the exposure just the way you want it. My main motivation for buying the light was to get some better macro shots. And my first experiments suggest that it’s going to be just the thing. Here’s one I did earlier:
Shutter speed: 1/180s
Focal length: 60mm
Taken: 10 December, 2013
More macro shots as my tuit supply allows…
Back up a bit today, but never mind…
Apparently I took some photos with my iPhone on Friday. I don’t actually recall that, oddly enough. This one has a certain something
 Let’s just hope that’s all that I don’t recall
 I don’t recall if there’s anything else I don’t recall, oddly enough
