The Etymology of Drinks

You might recall me mentioning that entertaining and informative book, The Etymologicon a while ago. Since reading that and its companion piece, The Horologicon, I’ve kept an eye on author Mark Forsyth’s blog for more interesting linguistic stuff. And today, in a new post, he’s come up with something rather special for this time of the year.

In Christmas Drinking, Mark takes a look at the origins of the names of some popular drinks. On video. While sampling the drinks in question. I think I’d better let the video speak for itself:

I should point out that Mark is a skilled etymologist, and it is not advisable for the general public to attempt to emulate his work in this video. Well, not if anyone sober is watching.
