Met Office loses BBC weather forecasting contract

Apparently the BBC is now obliged to put out the contract to competitive tender, so we can presumably expect future forecasts to be done by whoever makes up the panic weather stories for the Daily Fail and the Daily Excess. And we won’t need any of those fancy graphics, an old map will do. The presenter will probably be an unpaid trainee who’ll stand there and announce that three years’ worth of rain will fall in ten seconds, and there will be a simultaneous drought, flood, heatwave and five metre snowdrifts.

Or, you know, maybe we should let people who know what they’re doing carry on doing the job?

I know the BBC is under pressure from the government, but this is the kind of thing that makes its critics job easier. The way to win is to not be crap…
