Back in the 80s, one of my most listened to albums was Soul Mining by the The – a band defined as Matt Johnson and whoever happens to be working with him at the time. Come to think of it, it’s still one of my most listened to albums, along with its successors. But it’s been a long time since there was a new album from Matt, other than some soundtracks, which were excellent work, but a bit lacking in the actual song department.
Well, things are changing. Originally released in insufficient numbers for that Record Store Day thingy (not for me, involves queues, crowds and vinyl), but in response to demand is now available on iTunes and probably other such places, this is the new single, which is a tribute to Matt’s late brother Andy, known and loved as Andy Dog, creator of some stunning artwork on Matt’s albums:
It will be included in a forthcoming documentary, and more material may follow. There were reports of an actual album at some point…
Oh, and when I say “whoever happens to be working with him”, I include amongst other people, the great Johnny Marr.
